Caprovine

Four questions are inherent in any reconstruction of prehistoric caprovine (sheep and goat) husbandry from faunal remains: the ratio of sheep to goats, the sex-ratio, the distribution of age with death, and the relative numerical importance of the two species within the faunal spectrum.

We can conclude at this point that communitie with caprovine husbandry are certainly attested in northern Africa, particularly in Sudan, at about 5000 bc.

As regards the bovine and caprovine remains associated in these sites to the Cardial style pottery, [Marta] Camps (1982) noted that “It would seem that in this area the introduction of domesticated animals coincided with the beginning of the pottery production.”
