Depresso

I disagree. The character is NOT sympathetic. He is a depresso.

It took a lot of energy to "be good", and the easiest way to do so was to become withdrawn and depressed. A depresso isn't going out and about meeting people, you know. :-)

Depression is an illness with a high death rate. One of the main aims of treating us depressos is to help us not kill ourselves from the despair that is all too often part of our depression.

this life reflecting stuff, i dunno man. isn't that what depressos do all the fucking time? it's what i do most of the time. the theories all sound so easy.

I'd heard of this before, a certain proportion of depressos who are "treatment resistant" have a borderline thyroid deficiency which doesn't show in the normal blood test but does in the more sophisticated one, in which case addition of thyroxine may suddenly kick-start the antidepressant into action.

Maybe there's an evolutionary advantage to carrying *some* of the genes, otherwise the thing would presumably have died out long ago. Creativity? There does seem to be a higher than average proportion of creative depressos (likewise homosexuals, likewise left handers).
