Dighi

The Rájás and Zamíndárs have, as a rule, appropriated a portion of their wealth to the establishment of Thakurbáris and the excavation of dighís and tanks.

The mazar is not only a place of worship, but today the structure stands as a symbol of hope, beauty, a place where many locals come together, enjoy the weather by the dighi (pond) or just to be absorbed by the peace and serenity around. […] Of the large number of dighis and ponds excavated by him [Khan Jahan Ali] the most notable are the Khanjali Dighi (1450) near his tomb and Ghoradighi, measuring 230 by 460 metres (750 by 1,500 ft) to the west of Shatgumbaj Mosque.

Dighis are square or circular reservoirs used to store water for personal use. The water is supplied to the dighis by the canal and each dighi has its own sluice gate.

The owner of Wazir Dighi has decided to fill the 300-year-old pond in Cumilla for constructing a community centre, a coffee house and a market. Located in the heart of the city (ward 5), the historical dighi (a large pond) is losing its existence since two-thirds of its water has already been pumped out, alleged locals. […] Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA)'s Cumilla Unit President Dr Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said, "Filling ponds and water bodies is completely illegal. No one can fill his own ponds, dighis and reservoirs."
