Exorbiant

AUCTIONS, or selling goods of any kind by advance to the highest bidder, are in general delasive, and seldom answer the end of the purchaser, as he frequently obtains his commodities at an exorbiant rate.

Conscious of their fear and hatred, the Persian conqueror governed his new subjects with an iron sceptre; and as if he suspected the stability of his dominion, he exhausted their wealth by exorbiant tributes and licentious rapine, despoiled or demolished the temples of the East, and transported to his hereditary realms the gold, the silver, the precious marbles, the arts, and the artists of the Asiatic cities.

That is, land which cannot be brought under cultivation except at an exorbiant cost should be classed as unculturable whether such land is in isolated blocks or within cultivated holdings.
