The Swedes become excellent citizens of a republic for that very reason: reverence for, and loyalty to, the institutions and historial development of the country in which they dwell.

To put it sympathetically, historials were praised for their ability to reduce the flux of the past to an ordered, patterned account which had a satisfactory overall shape.
