The disruption has caused hours of ongoing downtime, in which Matrix.org said the organization had run into issues "rebuilding production from scratch." Websites, databases, synapse, LBs, and media repositories were all impacted. Modular.im homeservers, however, are unscathed.

That figure is therefore the total number of addressable users visible to the matrix.org homeserver, but doesn't include servers or users not viewable on the public network or those that don't report usage stats.

The first two attacks provide a simple confidentiality break by exploiting the homeserver's control over the users and devices that are permitted to join a private room.
