Overhaste

The mischief arising from the overhaste of both the bodies in question in stamping with their approving mark most questionable dogmas, without full inquiry first had, is palpably shown in the position which Mr. Atherton thinks himself entitled to hold in consequence. Nothing ought to pass current with those societies but what has the genuine ring of sound science.

Consciousness of power has not betrayed the author into the common fault of overhaste to execute ill-matured conceptions. He has evidently taken the trouble in the first place to possess himself with a clear understanding of his own purposes and of the method in which they were to be worked out; and then, having laid down his plan, he has steadily adhered to it. The result is a sound, symmetrical, and well finished piece of workmanship. In form it is an autobiography.

Almost the only fact connected with his literary life which has come down to us is one which has been recorded, perhaps with jealousy, certainly with ill-temper, by his friend Ben Jonson — that he wrote with overhaste, and hardly ever erased a line, though it would have been better had he done so with many.

Touching the sophisms, even Aristotle, Rhet. setting forth of the truth, or of a patriot warning against wrong-doing and overhaste.

According to one of these, a young native of Friburg, who had been engaged in the battle, keenly desirous of being the first to carry home tidings of the victory, ran — the whole way—a distance of ten or twelve miles—and with such overhaste that on his arrival at the marketplace he dropped with fatigue, and, barely able to shout that the Swiss were victorious, immediately expired.
