Ubudehe

There is muted concern from some stakeholders that the concept of ubudehe unless monitored carefully, could come to be used in a top-down way, which would limit meaningful participation by the rural poor.

For me, what I believe in most is ubudehe, which gives jobs to local people and they get paid. This does not mean that in some areas, ubudehe has not been mismanaged.

Using the example of recent ubudehe deliberations by members of one community in his sector, the official related the following account.

In ubudehe, cells receive small funds (i.e., 1,000 USD) that they complement with their own resources (i.e., labour) to carry out locally designed projects such as upgrading or formation of anti-erosion terraces, upgrading or construction of roads, construction of schools, etc.
