Vaporium

Dr. Felix Bricheteau, in the Bull. Gen. de Therup. for July, 1867 recommends the " vaporium," or chamber filled with the vapor of water in pulmonary consumption.

Among the accessories may be a “vaporium,” devised by Dr. Percy Wilde for local application of heat or cold.

The vaporium designed by Dr. Percy Wilde was used to treat a limb afflicted with neurological symptoms.

The flues for conveying the warm water into the sweating room, and the fireplace, were also found in a pretty perfect state, as well as a tesselated floor laid over hollow bricks planted round the circular vaporium.

According to him, although Bareges and Luchon are in this category, they are much inferior to Aix, where one has a vaporium of 40° to 45° C. (104° to 112° Fahr.), and so large a quantity of water that the different bathing operations can be varied to any extent.

In the west wing is the bathing establishment, consisting of anteroom with privies, the apodyterium, the semicircular basin, reached by three steps, the vaporium with heating pipes for warm and hot baths, and the boiler-room with vaulted furnace.

Employed already in the times of remote antiquity in the vaporia and tepidoria of the ancients, it has to-day acquired novel attractions, since the firewood of bygone days and the alcohol of our forefathers have been replaced by gas and electricity; and especialliy since those famous hot air boxes, manufactured abroad and imported here, appeal to the patient by reason of their magnificent high degress of heat.
